Description

Abstract:
Marine cloud brightening (MCB) is a proposed method of cooling global temperatures to reduce some effects of climate change. In this study, we investigate the efficacy of regional marine cloud brightening in the North Pacific for mitigating extreme heat in Western North America. We find cloud brightening in the remote mid-latitudes cools more over our target region than brightening in a proximate subtropical region, but both reduce the relative risk of summer heat exposure under present-day conditions by up to 39% and 25% respectively. However, nonlinear climate responses to the same interventions under mid-century warming produce hotter rather than cooler summers. This result demonstrates the risks in assuming that regional interventions effective under certain conditions will remain effective as the climate continues to change.
