THE YEAR IS 1973 DURING THE EARLY SUMMER GRAPE HARVEST IN THE ARVIN-LAMONT AREA, SOUTH OF BAKERSFIELD CALIFORNIA. CESAR CHAVEZ AND HIS UNITED FARM WORKERS UNION HAVE CALLED A STRIKE. THE SETTING FOR THIS SERIES OF PHOTOS IS A PUBLIC PARK WHERE A STRIKE RALLY TAKES PLACE AT WHICH CESAR CHAVEZ IS THE MAIN SPEAKER. AS HE ARRIVES, CESAR IS SURROUNDED BY FARMWORKERS AND THEIR SUPPORTERS AS HE MAKES HIS WAY TO THE MAKE-SHIFT SPEAKERS PODIUM - A PICNIC TABLE IN THE SHADE OF THE PARK TREES.
