| IntroductionPaul Fusco
Introduction by LeRoy Chatfield
Memory plays tricks, but I’m confident I first met Paul Fusco in 1967 when he came to Delano to shoot Cesar Chavez and his fledgling farmworker movement. I say shoot, because Paul was a staff photographer for LOOK magazine and the rapid fire shots reeled off his camera with such intensity, they punctuated the air. Sometimes he was standing on a chair or atop a table, other times, he was lying on the floor or under a desk; it seemed to make no difference, his camera whizzed non-stop, roll after roll. It was my first experience with a professional photographer; I was fascinated.
In 1967, LOOK and LIFE were the print media’s version of the major leagues, and despite the fact that the Delano Grape Strike (1965) was barely two years old, Cesar Chavez and his movement had been selected for a national story; Paul Fusco was our link.
