INTERJECTING THE 1960'S ENERGY AND IDEALISM OF COLLEGE STUDENTS INTO THE FARMWORKER MOVEMENT MADE A TREMENDOUS IMPACT ON THE DELANO STRIKERS AND THEIR SUPPORTERS. IN TURN, THE HARD WORK, SACRIFICE, AND COMMITMENT OF THE FARMWORKERS TO THEIR LA CAUSA MADE A HUGE IMPRESSION ON THE STUDENTS. MOST LEFT AT THE END OF THE SUMMER AS PLANNED, BUT SOME STAYED ON FOR AS LONG AS A DECADE. THE FARMWORKER CONSUMER BOYCOTTS WERE BUILT BY THOUSANDS OF DEDICATED AND HARDWORKING STUDENT VOLUNTEERS.
AT THE END OF EACH FARMWORKER MEETING, THE CLOSING PRAYER - "WE SHALL OVERCOME" - WAS SUNG. IN THIS PHOTO, THE DELANO SUMMER PROJECT VOLUNTEERS JOINED THE FARMWORKERS, LEARNED TO CROSS THEIR ARMS, HOLD HANDS, AND SING THE WORDS.

IN AUGUST 1966, BILL KIRCHER, THE NATIONAL DIRECTOR OF ORGANIZING FOR THE AFL-CIO, NEGOTIATED A MERGER BETWEEN AWOC AND THE NFWA, WHICH WOULD BECOME UFWOC (United Farm Workers Organizing Committee, AFL-CIO). CESAR CHAVEZ WAS NAMED PRESIDENT, AND LARRY ITLIONG WAS NAMED VICE-PRESIDENT. IN THIS PHOTOS CESAR CHAVEZ AND LARRY ITLIONG DISPLAY THE NEW AFL-CIO CHARTER, WHICH AUTHORIZED THEIR NEW UNION.

AFTER THE MERGER, THE DELANO STRIKERS MARCHED AND PICKETED WITH THEIR NEW UFWOC FLAGS AND SIGNS. THE AZTEC EAGLE SURVIVED THE MERGER INTACT.

THE DIGIORGIO BOYCOTT BROUGHT AN AGREEMENT TO HOLD SECRET BALLOT ELECTIONS FOR THE COMPANY'S FARMWORKERS. THESE ELECTIONS WOULD BE ADMINISTERED AND SUPERVISED BY THE AMERICAN ARBITRATION ASSOCIATION AND THE BALLOT WOULD GIVE WORKERS ONE OF THREE CHOICES: "UFWOC" - "TEAMSTERS" - "NO UNION". CESAR CHAVEZ, FRED ROSS, DOLORES HUERTA AND STUDENT VOLUNTEERS GO OVER THE ELIGIBILITY LIST OF DIGIORGIO WORKERS WHO WOULD BE ENTITLED TO VOTE.
THE DIGIORGIO CAMPAIGN BEGAN WITH A SERIES OF FARMWORKER RALLIES. LUIS VALDEZ WAS THE MC AND HIS SIDEKICK WAS THE GIFTED EL TEATRO MUSICIAN, AGUSTIN LIRA. WHEN LUIS VALDEZ STEPPED ONTO A FARMWORKER RALLY STAGE, HE LIT UP THE AUDIENCE. A UNIQUE TALENT WITH A LARGE AND CONFIDENT VOICE, AN INFECTIOUS LAUGH, AND WITH A LIGHTENING FAST WIT OF SELF-DEPRECATION, HE GATHERED UP THE AUDIENCE INTO THE PALM OF HIS HAND. LUIS VALDEZ, ORIGINALLY FROM DELANO, WAS A GOD-SEND VOLUNTEER TO THE FARMWORKER MOVEMENT.
UFWOC ORGANIZER, EDDIE PEREZ, PLAYED A DYNAMIC ROLE IN THE DIGIORGIO UNION ELECTION CAMPAIGN. HE WAS INTENSE, HIGH ENERGY, FOCUSED, AND A GIFTED COMMUNICATOR. HE WAS MOST EFFECTIVE WITH YOUNGER WORKERS.
DIGIORGIO WORKERS LINE UP OUTSIDE THE POLLING PLACE, WAITING TO BE PROCESSED BY THE AMERICAN ARBITRATION ASSOCIATION TO INSURE THEY WERE ELIGIBLE TO VOTE.

AFTER THE POLLS WERE CLOSED, THE BALLOT BOXES WERE DRIVEN TO SAN FRANCISCO ACCOMPANIED BY THE ELECTION OBSERVORS REPRESENTING ALL THE PARTIES. THE BOXES WERE OPENED LATER THAT DAY AND COUNTED. CESAR CHAVEZ ANNOUNCES THE RESULTS OF THE ELECTION TO THE FARMWORKERS AND THEIR SUPPORTERS WHO GATHERED AT FILIPINO HALL IN DELANO, HOPING AND PRAYING FOR A VICTORY. UFWOC - 530; TEAMSTERS - 331; NO UNION - 12. SO MUCH FOR THE GROWERS STRIKE PROPAGANDA "MY WORKERS DO NOT WANT A UNION."
AFTER THE VICTORY ANNOUNCEMENT, THE DELANO STRIKERS CARRY CESAR CHAVEZ ON THEIR SHOULDERS FOR A WELL-DESERVED VICTORY LAP AROUND FILIPINO HALL. VIVA LA CAUSA! VIVA LA HUELGA! VIVA CESAR CHAVEZ!
