25921 viewsDELANO STRIKERS HAD A FLAIR FOR DRESSING FOR THE OCCASION. MANUAL VASQUEZ, A MARCH LIEUTENANT, SET THE TONE WITH A RED HUELGA VEST, AN ARM BAND AND HAT BAND PINNED WITH HUELGA BUTTONS, AND A BUTTON ON HIS HAT BRIM THAT READ: "I AM AN AGITATOR" - A SWIPE AT THE GROWER PUBLIC RELATIONS PROPAGANDA, WHICH HELD THERE WERE NO STRIKERS, JUST "OUTSIDE AGITATORS." IN THE HISTORY OF EFFORTS TO ORGANIZE FARMWORKERS, THE WORD "AGITATOR" WAS A CODE WORD FOR "COMMUNIST" ORGANIZER.

02917 viewsCALIFORNIA FARMWORKERS WERE REQUIRED TO SPEND HOURS AT A TIME STOOPED OVER USING A SHORT HANDLE HOE TO WEED OR THIN CROPS. NO SHADE, NO WATER OR TOILET PROVIDED, NO MINIMUM WAGE, NO REST BREAKS, NO UNEMPLOYMENT OR MEDICAL BENEFITS, NO JOB PROTECTION OF ANY KIND - NOT EVEN BETTER OFF THAN BEASTS OF BURDEN. IN 1965, BECAUSE OF CESAR CHAVEZ AND HIS FARMWORKER MOVEMENT, THE CALIFORNIA SUPREME COURT FORBADE THE USE OF THE SHORT HANDLED HOE.

THEY SANG, PERFORMED SLAPSTICK "ACTOS" DEPICTING THE STRUGGLE OF THE FARMWORKERS WITH THE GROWERS, LABOR CONTRACTORS AND LOCAL POLICE. THE AUDIENCE APPLAUDED AND ROARED ALOUD IN SUPPORT OF THEIR PERFORMANCES, THEN LUIS DECLAIMED "PLAN OF DELANO," THE REVOLUTIONARY THEME OF THE MARCH, AND INTRODUCED CESAR CHAVEZ, THE MAIN EVENT.

29897 viewsCESAR CHAVEZ WAS NOT A FIREBRAND SPEAKER, IN FACT JUST THE OPPOSITE. LOW KEY, SOFT-SPOKEN AND SINCERE, HE WAS ABLE TO MOVE HIS AUDIENCE WITH HIS CANNY ABILITY TO EXPLAIN COMPLEX MATTERS IN WORDS AND ANALOGIES THAT MADE SENSE TO PEOPLE. HE EXUDED CONFIDENCE AND FEARLESSNESS, HE EMPOWERED HIS AUDIENCE TO BELIEVE THEY COULD OVERCOME THE INJUSTICE THAT ENSLAVED THEM. "SI SE PUEDE!" BECAME HIS SIGNATURE MOTTO.
