Library Cards and Borrowing Privileges

Current UC San Diego faculty, staff, and students may use their UC San Diego ID card to borrow library materials. Other patrons are eligible for borrowing privileges upon registration. See Library Cards & Loan Periods for details.

You can check out items at the Front Desks of the Geisel or Biomedical Library Buildings or use the self-checkout machines located near the entrance in either building.

  • At the Front Desks or at book return bins.

Return bins are located outside Geisel Library’s front doors or outside the north and south entrances of the Biomedical Library Building. Additionally, drive-up return bins are located on Hopkins Drive, just west of Geisel Library.

Course Reserves Returns

Course Reserves must be returned to the Front Desk from which the material was borrowed. After-hours book returns are located next to Geisel Library’s entrance. During Geisel Overnight Study Commons hours, course reserves may also be returned to the Geisel Front Desk book drop.

Renew UC San Diego Materials

Renew your  UC San Diego books and DVDs online, over the phone or in person.

  1. Go to My Library Account / Renew Items.
  2. Log in with the barcode on the back of your UC San Diego ID card.
  3. If this is the first time you login, you will need to create a pin. Do this by leaving the Enter your PIN box blank and click Submit. You will be prompted to create a new pin on the next screen.
  4. Check the box next to the item(s) you want to renew, and select the “Renew Checked Items” button.

You can also renew items at the Front Desk of the Geisel or Biomedical Library Buildings, or by calling 858-534-0134 (Geisel Library Building) or 858-534-3253 (Biomedical Library Building). Items with recalls or holds, or in fine status, cannot be renewed.

 Renew Interlibrary Loan Materials

Request renewal of your Interlibrary Loan materials by logging into My ILL Request service or by contacting ILL.

  1. Click My ILL Requests (some instructions below)
  2. Log in with the barcode on the back of your UC San Diego ID card.
  3. Renew the item(s).

Please submit renewal requests within one week before the due date. Renewal requests submitted after the item's due date may result in late fees. Allow 4 to 5 business days for a final response.

If another UC San Diego faculty, staff, or student needs an item that is checked out, he or she may recall the item. This will shorten the original loan period for the current borrower. Recall policies are common in academic libraries where loan periods tend to be longer. As an alternative to recalling an item from another user, requesters are encouraged to seek the item via Circuit or Interlibrary Loan as a courtesy.

Items may be recalled by using the Request feature in Roger, or by contacting the Front Desk of the Geisel or Biomedical Library Buildings. A recall notice will be sent to the current borrower indicating the new due date. The amount of time a user will be given to return a recalled item will vary by item type. A pickup notice will be sent to the requestor when the recalled item is available for pickup. If items are returned after the recall date they will be subject to overdue charges.

Request and Hold Items

You can request Library items listed as “Available” on Roger to be pulled from the shelf and held at the Self-Service Hold Shelf at Geisel Library or Biomedical Library Building by selecting “Request” on the item’s information page. You’ll receive a notice within 1 to 4 business days when the item is available for pick up. It will be held for you for up to 7 days.

Members of the SIO Community are eligible to request materials from the Library to be delivered to the SIO campus.  Request items using the UC San Diego Library’s online catalog, Roger.  Consult the guide for Roger Request if you need assistance.  Please make sure that you have completed a Waiver form and turned it in to the Library to be eligible for this service. Contact Amy Butros for details or questions.

Missing Items & Searches

If you cannot find an item on the shelf and it is listed as “Available” in Roger, report it missing by contacting the Front Desk of the Geisel or Biomedical Library Buildings. Library staff will verify the item’s status and shelving location, and initiate a search request if the item cannot be located.

Library Notices

The UC San Diego Library sends all notices via email. Library notices for UC San Diego faculty, staff, and students are sent to your official UC San Diego email address.

The Library is not responsible for notices that are not received. Failure to respond to notices can result in suspension of Library borrowing privileges and the assessment of Library fines and/or fees. If you do not receive Library notices, contact the Front Desk of the Geisel or Biomedical Library Buildings.
