The elections, finally permitted in February by the Rightists, give an immense majority to the defenders of the people's cause, and open the prisons where thousands of workers have been for more than a year suffering under the most barbarous reactionary repressions.

The parties of the left, unified under the banner of the Popular Front, won the elections of 1936. Their victory closed the period of government led by the right known as the biennio negro. However, hostility between partisans of the left and right only intensified after the elections, heightened by the collapse of the republican center. While the new Popular Front sped ahead with reforms, the right grew increasingly concerned with the direction of the country.
At the top of the image a clenched fist, a common socialist symbol, breaks through a gridiron. Arrows penetrate a serpent representing the right.
