With weeping figures in the background and a fallen compatriot as his side, the unarmed gudari in this image faces a line of bayonets. Though the clenched fist seems suggestive of a socialist salute, it is unlikely this was the intention. Likely far more intentional, a protective hand has been placed over an ikurriña stitched above the heart.
