Connect to Library Resources

You can access UC San Diego Library resources and services from anywhere.

The Library provides access to thousands of e-journals, e-books, databases, and other digital materials for UC San Diego faculty, staff, and students. Access to many Library licensed resources is managed using a secure login system called OpenAthens, which allows you to connect to library resources using your Active Directory (AD) login credentials.

Remote access is restricted to current UC San Diego students, faculty, and staff. For off-campus access to resources the Library provides, the preferred method is to log in through UC Library Search or on many publisher and resource pages.

How to access Library resources, whether on or off campus, using OpenAthens

Option 1: Connect directly through UC Library Search

Search for your resource in UC Library Search and follow the Active Directory login instructions.

Option 2: Sign in at a publisher or resource site

Look for options like “Sign in Through My Institution,” “Access via OpenAthens,” or similar.
Search for “San Diego” and choose “University of California San Diego” when prompted. Note: not all resources are available with this method.
Some platforms may ask you to select your federation; select OpenAthens Federation.

Troubleshooting

OpenAthens uses cookies to remember your device’s IP address. If you change web browsers – from Firefox to Chrome for example – you will be asked to sign in again. Additionally, if you change devices, for example from a laptop to mobile, you will need to sign in again.
Use the UC San Diego Active Directory (or AD) Password Change Tool if you don't know your password.

Configure UC San Diego VPN for Off-Campus Access (Alternative Access)

Using the campus VPN is the alternative way to access the Library's resources from off campus.To download and use VPN AnyConnect, you'll need an Active Directory (AD) username and password, and permission to install software on your device. Select “2- Step-Secured - all thru UCSD” in order to access Library resources and be sure to approve your sign-in through Duo.

Check your Connection
