East Asia Collection

Established in 1987, the East Asia Collection focuses on collecting modern and contemporary Chinese, Japanese, and Korea (CJK) language materials in the humanities and social sciences, including literature, history, sociology, linguistics, art, film studies, philosophy, economy business, political science, and international relations pertaining to each region.

With over 200,000 volumes in print, 1,200,000 digital titles from multiple databases, 19,000 visual images, and 3,000 films, this expanding collection is rapidly becoming recognized as a new regional as well as national resource center for researchers and students in the field of East Asia area studies.

The East Asia Collection is housed on the 4th floor of Geisel Library. The Collection is kept up to date and have an ongoing book exhibit that rotates between new books and specific themes selected by the Librarians.

In 2020, UC San Diego Foundation trustee and alumna Sally T. WongAvery '75 established the Sally T. WongAvery Collection of Chinese Materials with the donation of a complete collection of Chinese News. She went on to establish the Sally T. WongAvery Fund for East Asian Collections and the Natasha Wong Endowment for East Asian Collections in 2022 in support of UC San Diego Library’s East Asian collections, research, and scholarly activities.
