Students in front of Geisel Library BuildingThe Library Student Advisory Council (LSAC) is a group of UC San Diego students and Library staff working together to provide the campus’ diverse student community with the best possible library spaces, services, and collections.

The LSAC application period for the 2024-2025 school year is closed. Keep an eye on this page for 2025-2026 applications to open in the spring.

What would I gain from the experience?

  • Serving on the Council offers an opportunity to:
    • Share with Library staff concerns of highest priority to students
    • Provide connections for future references
    • Meet new friends and student peers
    • Help create the kind of UC San Diego community students want
    • Influence the shape of Library services and spaces important to you and your peers

What is expected of members?

  • Members are expected to:
    • Actively participate in meetings in October, November, January, February, April, and May (meetings will be held in person, but LSAC participation may also include some supplemental virtual elements)
    • Convey student needs, concerns, and priorities to the Library, including advice and feedback on library policies, services, and spaces
    • Share ideas and input on the design and implementation of new library services
    • Share insights into student study, research, and Library use habits
    • Communicate information about Library services and resources to the student community

2023-2024

Meeting 1: October 17, 2023 | Topics included “Get to know me a Skittle” ice breaker introductions, a scavenger hunt for locations of interest in Geisel followed by initial thoughts on the locations, and an introduction to the main project LSAC will be working on for 2023-24: a refresh of the Geisel Tunnel.

Meeting 2: November 14, 2023 | Topics included feedback on furniture mockups for the Geisel Tunnel, feedback on potential color palettes for the renovated space, a tour of the Library’s Preservation Lab, a presentation about student employment in the Library, a request that students promote the Geisel Review 2023, and an invitation to participate in an I Like/I Wish/What If activity about Library physical spaces, digital spaces, services, and events.

2022-2023

Meeting 1: October 18, 2022 | Topics included LSAC advice to the Library using an I Like / I Wish / What If exercise where members gave feedback on what they like about the library, what they wish the library would be like, and their future dreams for the library.

Meeting 2: November 15, 2022 | Topics included an update on responses from the Library based on October’s I Like / I Wish / What If exercise, a presentation on student employment at the Library (guest from Library HR), and a tour of the Library’s Preservation Lab (guest from Preservation).

Meeting 1: October 19, 2021 | Topics included LSAC advice to the Library using an I Like / I Wish / What If exercise where members gave feedback on what they like about the library, what they wish the library would be like, and their future dreams for the library. Members were also asked for ideas on increasing the number of students masking in the Library.

Meeting 2: November 16, 2021 | Topics included an update on the status of the Floor 2 renovation at Geisel Library, a presentation on student employment at the Library (guest from Library HR), and a tour of the Library’s Preservation Lab (guest from Preservation).

Meeting 3: January 18, 2022 | Topics included an overview of the Library’s strategic planning work (guests from Office of Operational Strategic Initiatives) and feedback the current and aspirational states of the Library.

Meeting 4: February 15, 2022 | Topics included a tour of Special Collections & Archives (guest from SC&A) and feedback on reimagining the Geisel Floor 1 Tunnel.

  • Tunnel Visions: Visual concepts on how the Geisel Floor 1 Tunnel could be redesigned.

Meeting 5: April 19, 2022 | Topics included the LSAC group photo, tours of the Library’s Digital Media Lab and Data & GIS Lab (guest from DML/GIS Lab), and feedback about UC Library Search, the Library’s new online discovery tool.

Meeting 1: October 20, 2020 | Topics included LSAC advice to the Library and feedback on what comes to mind when students think about the Library, on library services, and on the Library's Ask Us webpage

Meeting 2: November 17, 2020 | Topics included a virtual exploration of the Library’s Digital Collections and feedback on a number of library services as well as the BLB Student Study Space

Meeting 3: January 19, 2021 | Topics included a virtual exploration of the Library’s Data & GIS Lab, feedback on the Library’s Virtual Study Room sessions, and expectations about the Library’s online chat services

Meeting 4: February 16, 2021 | Topics included a virtual visit of the Library’s Special Collections & Archives, feedback on the Library’s De-Stress Publication, member images and comment on their pandemic study spaces, and feedback on potential future LSAC topics related to the Library’s organizational structure and strategic priorities for 2020-2022.

Meeting 5: April 20, 2021 | Topics included an activity to choose a Library resource and write a brief promotion convincing other students about its benefits, information about CDM’s role in the preservation of and care for library materials, feedback on priority needs for services and spaces for Fall 2021, feedback on features of UC Library Search, and feedback on the Tech Lending Program.

Meeting 6: May 18, 2021 | Topics included a thank you for participation, a summary of Library decisions informed by LSAC feedback during the year, a video interview with Audrey Geisel University Librarian Erik Mitchell about his role, a video presentation about student employment opportunities in the Library, feedback on a summer study space in Geisel Library and Fall 2021 plans for group study rooms, feedback on the Library Resources Link in the Canvas Learning Management System, recognition of LSAC members, and farewell messages from Library representatives.

2019-2020

Meeting 1: October 15, 2019 | Topics included LSAC advice to the Library and scavenger hunts to find areas within Geisel Library and information on the Library’s website
